THE LOVE FOR (GRAND) PIANO’S

Jazzpianist Derk de Koning Gans (Jazzydmusic) learns how to become friends with the piano at the tender age of five. His younger years were filled with listening to the vinyl record collection of his dad. Listening over and over again to albums by the great Piano Masters such as Oscar Peterson, Erroll Garner and Monty Alexander made a lasting impression on this young piano prodigy.  You can still notice he remembers the specific timing and swing of the Jazzgods and made that his own trademark.

Since the age of five the love for (Grand) Piano’s got even stronger when Derk started working for Cristofori Piano’s & Vleugels on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam. This beautiful building in the canal district of Amsterdam was heaven for piano lovers, selling Steinway, Bösendorfer, Blüthner, Yamaha and many other amazing instruments.

Working at Cristofori made it possible to visit many famous piano factories in Germany and France. To witness the process of how these instruments were built, made a lasting  impression.

On Monday mornings, Derk would be in the building one hour before opening the shop, thus making it possible to play the Bösendorfer Imperial Grand on the top floor of this stunning Amsterdam Canal House. This very piano was always used  during the usual Sunday classical concerts.

This is one of the reasons why the Jazzydmusic website starts with the sentence “the piano was my first love and it will be my last”.
